Nutrition Education

The Kentucky State University Nutrition Education Program (KYSU-NEP) encompasses the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)  and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP-Ed). The goal of KYSU-NEP is to provide interactive learning experiences to promote healthy food choices and physical activity consistent with the most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans. With special attention to minority families and individuals, the KYSU-NEP will implement nutrition education and obesity prevention programs for limited resource individuals and families with young children. Our hope is for KYSU-NEP participants to gain skills to plan nutritious meals on a limited budget, acquire safe food handling practices, improve food preparation skills, and change food behaviors that are necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle. EFNEP is a federally funded grant administered through the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) and focus on educating low-income families on ways to improve food behaviors in core areas such as: food security, food resource management, food safety, diet quality and physical activity. SNAP-Ed is a federally funded and administered through the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS). SNAP-ed’s core focus is to provide education and resources that empower that will allow recipients of SNAP benefits to gain skills on how to make their food dollars stretch when making healthy meals.
