Strengthening KY (SKY) Families Program
Cooperative Extension | 4H – Youth Development | Small Scale Farm Program Grants |
The Strengthening KY Families (SKY) Parenting Education initiative provides instructional information on relevant issues that help divert crisis situations when parenting infants through young adults for families in the Lexington/Fayette County region of Kentucky. SKY Families uses a strengths-based, community partnered approach to strengthen and enhance existing parenting skills. We believe people are capable of making the best choice when they are able to identify and remove barriers that impair their ability to achieve parental success. SKY Families offers a twelve-week program focused on preventing or intervening in familial crisis situations. By offering an evidence-based culturally competent strategy, SKY Families aides in the family reunification process and helps individuals move towards self-sufficiency.
According to the Child Welfare Information Gateway, successful partnerships can extend the reach of limited resources, improve service access and delivery, enhance relationships among public and private service providers, and create community responsibility for child safety and family stability (2000). SKY Families Program collaborates with the faith-based Imani Family Life Center, Inc., the Fayette County Family Court and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services to teach parenting skills that are designed to improve the quality of parents’ relationships with their children, thereby improving the quality of life for families and the community.
