Student Rights and Responsibilities
As an “otherwise qualified student with a documented disability”
- You have a right to have equal access to KSU’s programs, courses, facilities, and activities through reasonable accommodations.
- You have a right to choose not to inform the DRC office of your disability. However, if you choose not to register with the DRC, you will not receive special services or accommodations.
-
You have a right to confidentiality. Your documentation will not be included with other university
records. Your accommodations or disability status will not be noted on your academic
transcript. The contents of your personal file will not be released to anyone without
your written permission except:
- As part of data reports that will not personally identify yo or share your personal details; or
- For the formal investigation of a complaint or as required by law.
- Seven years after your last use of accommodations at the University, your confidential records will be carefully destroyed (shredded) by DRC staff.
- You have a right to receive reasonable accommodations at no cost to you that are essential to your particular needs as a student in classrooms and to be an active participant in the selection process.
- You have a right at any time to discontinue using any or all of the accommodations for which you have been approved.
- You have a right to appeal if you believe you were unjustly denied accommodations or believe that discrimination occurred during the course of their delivery. If your complaint cannot be resolved with the help of the DRC Coordinator, you may discuss it with KSU’s Assistant Director of Human Resources for Disability Services at 429 Academic Services Building.
- You are responsible for providing documentation to DRC as part of establishing your eligibility for services. Additional information about this requirement can be found in a special section of this website titled “Disability Documentation Guidelines”.
- You are responsible for requesting services before they are needed to allow reasonable time for accommodations to be arranged prior to your need for them. Ideally, a two week notice is the minimum amount of time the DRC needs to ensure your services are in place before classes begin. If you need the services of an interpreter, it is in your best interest to notify the DRC before you enroll. Call the DRC again immediately after your acceptance into the University.
- You are responsible for using your accommodations once they are established. This may involve some coordination on your part to make specific arrangements with professors and other providers.
- You are responsible for attending all classes. Accommodations cannot help you if you do not attend class.
- You are responsible for completing all assignments in the class.
- You are responsible for reserving the services and materials provided to you for your use only. They are not be shared, loaned, or sold to others. Using services in a dishonest way will not be permitted.
- You are responsible for the expense and arrangement of any personal aids or services that exceed the University’s obligation. You can clarify any confusion about this distinction at your initial intake session or by contacting the DRC in advance.
- You are responsible for renewing your request for accommodations each new semester. Renewal is a simple matter making an appointment with the DRC office staff.
- You are responsible for notifying the DRC Coordinator if you need help with a situation, there is a problem with your services, or if you would like additional referrals for other services.
- You are responsible for informing the DRC office if there is a change in the status of your documented disability that might change your eligibility for continued services or if you need additional services.
