Fish Genetics Online

The Kentucky State University Division of Aquaculture offers both a 3-credit-hour Fish Genetics undergraduate, (AQU 407) and a graduate (AQU 507) Internet course. Dr. Boris Gomelsky teaches the courses. These classes are taught in a video format. Students see instructor’s recorded PowerPoint lectures and video clips.

The graduate-level course (AQU 507) is intended for students who already have or are completing a bachelor’s (or higher) degree. During the course, students take four online tests. Graduate-level students also prepare a review paper directed towards a more detailed examination of one topic in fish genetics.

This online course presents an overview of fish genetics.  The emphasis will be on practical applications for  aquaculture and fisheries management. The course consists of seven parts, which include 17 lectures (classes):

    • Class 8. Protein Polymorphism and Its Application

Every lecture is divided into several modules (video segments). Students may view modules on their computers as often as they wish.

Who may take Fish Genetics?

Anyone who:

  • Wants to add a course on Fish Genetics into his/her present university curriculum.
  • Already has a degree in biology or in some other area and is interested in aquaculture or fisheries.
  • Wants to get credit hours without attending a traditional classroom.
  • Presently works in aquaculture or fisheries areas and needs knowledge of fish genetics for his/her professional development.

Why Fish Genetics online?

Fisheries, Aquatic Sciences, or Aquaculture programs offered by many universities may not include a specialized course in Fish Genetics. This Web class can fill that need. Biology students may take this course, also.

Is a textbook required?

A recent textbook on general genetics is highly recommended for a better understanding of Fish Genetics’ online materials.
