A Kentucky State University senior recently received the Joyce Dishman Owens scholarship, named for a former president of the Beta Gamma Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Owens was also a Kentucky State alumna and retired employee.

Miekayla Ford, a senior pre-professional biology major from San Antonio, Texas, will receive the $1000 scholarship during the Spirit of Ivy luncheon Jan. 19 in Lexington. The event has been held for the last 14 years to commemorate Coretta Scott King, an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. member, by acknowledging the service, excellence and leadership and women in the community.

“I am extremely grateful and elated,” Ford said. “It’s truly an honor for me.”

Donna M. George, scholarship coordinator, said Ford more than met the criteria for the scholarship through her community service, glowing letters of recommendation and GPA.
