Dr. Akakpo's Biography
Dr. Koffi Akakpo is an enthusiastic leader who advocates for student success on all levels. His “student-first” philosophy is the cornerstone of his work in higher education.
He became the 19th president of Kentucky State University on July 1, 2023, bringing to the role more than two decades of leadership in academic innovation, fiscal stewardship, and student success.
At Kentucky State, he is leading a new era of progress shaped by Vision 2028: Thorobreds Leading for Impact, a comprehensive strategic plan designed to expand access, strengthen student achievement, and deepen the University’s service to the Commonwealth and beyond. His leadership also advances the University’s 1890 land-grant mission, ensuring that research and Cooperative Extension programs deliver meaningful solutions in agriculture, health, and natural resources.
Prior to joining Kentucky State, Dr. Akakpo served as president of Bluegrass Community and Technical College, where he oversaw record enrollment growth and launched initiatives to improve advising, retention, and workforce alignment. He previously held senior leadership positions at Central State University, an 1890 land-grant HBCU in Ohio, and at North Central State College, where his financial leadership helped restore institutional stability. He also served with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Dr. Akakpo earned his Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University of Toledo and his master’s degree in business administration from Ashland University.
