Option in Aquaculture Systems
The Option in Aquaculture Systems is a degree track under the Bachelor of Agriculture. Students will be prepared for a variety of careers in a diverse industry through hands-on experiential learning opportunities with apprenticeships available.
Aquaculture is the rearing of aquatic organisms under controlled or semi-controlled conditions. Interest in aquaculture has increased drastically worldwide as fish consumption has increased concurrently with decreasing catches of wild fish. Aquaculture is the fastest growing food producing activity in the world and now produces over 50% of the world’s seafood. In Kentucky and the southern United States, aquaculture production focuses on raising freshwater species commercially.
Agriculture is one of the top-employing fields in the U.S. Students in Kentucky State University’s College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources will take advantage of the newly-renovated and state-of-the-art Atwood Research Facility, a 300-acre research and demonstration farm, a 14-acre aquaculture research facility, and a 300-acre environmental education and research facility.
