Campus Safety and Access Protocols FAQ

(Note: This section will be updated frequently as questions are received. A form to submit questions or concerns is linked via the button at the end of this section.)

Access and Entry

1) What is Kentucky State University doing to support a safe start to the Spring 2026 semester and beyond?
Kentucky State University has implemented enhanced safety and access measures, is continuing to review and strengthen security infrastructure and access protocols, and is coordinating with law enforcement partners to support a safe move-in and a strong, secure start to the semester. These measures reflect an ongoing commitment to a safe campus environment throughout the semester — not only at the start.

2) What are the current main campus entry and exit expectations?
All vehicular traffic to the main campus must enter through the main security gate (in front of Exum Hall — East Main St. and MLK Jr. Blvd.) and be prepared to show or swipe a Kentucky State University ID card upon entry. Campus must also be exited through the main security gate.

3) Will ID checks be enforced at campus access points?
Yes. Campus access is monitored 24/7, and members of the University community should continue to carry their Kentucky State University ID card and be prepared to present it upon request.

4) What should I do if my ID card access needs to be updated?
Employees who need ID card access updated should contact Auxiliary Services (ext. 5692) for assistance or email aux.services@kysu.edu.

5) What is being done to strengthen vehicular access control on South Campus?
A new gate has been ordered for the South Campus area to strengthen controlled access. Delivery and installation can take several weeks. In the meantime, temporary measures remain in place to slow entry and reinforce controlled access, and the University will share additional guidance as installation details are confirmed.

Building and Residence Hall Access

6) What are the expectations for building entry (doors, propping doors open, secured access)?
The expectation has not changed: do not prop open any doors, including office, academic, or residence hall entrances. Propping doors open defeats controlled access and creates avoidable risk for everyone.

7) What day-to-day access controls are in place for residence halls?
Residence halls are locked, and residents are expected to use their University-issued ID to enter. IDs may be checked at entry points, and desks may be monitored to help ensure only authorized individuals enter. If you misplace your ID, report it immediately to Residence Life so the card can be deactivated.

8) What are the visitation rules for residence halls?
Visitation is structured to limit the number of guests and maintain accountability for who is in the building. Overnight visitation is not permitted. Guests may be required to leave an ID during their visit so staff can track entry and exit.

9) What is “piggybacking,” and is it allowed?
Piggybacking — allowing additional individuals to enter behind a person who swipes in — is not permitted. Residents and guests are expected to follow entry protocols every time.

Security Presence and Coordination

10) Is security present inside campus buildings?
Yes. Security coverage and patrols are in place across academic and residential areas.

11) Are local law enforcement agencies supporting campus safety efforts?
Yes. Kentucky State University continues to coordinate with local law enforcement partners, including the Frankfort Police Department and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, to support campus safety and additional patrols.

12) What additional safety measures are being implemented beyond access controls?
Enhanced measures may include increased patrols, strengthened monitoring at key locations, and additional staffing to support campus safety operations, alongside continued review and strengthening of security infrastructure and protocols.

13) Will these protocols remain in place all semester?
These measures are designed to support safety at the start of the semester and beyond. Protocols may be adjusted as conditions warrant, and the University will communicate updates through official channels.

Policies and Accountability

14) What is the University’s weapons policy?
Firearms and weapons are prohibited in accordance with University policy, Kentucky law, and KRS 237.115. Violations may result in disciplinary action, including expulsion under the Student Code of Conduct and/or termination under applicable employment policies.

15) What protocols are in place to prevent weapons from being brought onto campus and into residence halls?
Weapons are strictly prohibited on University property and in residence halls. If a weapon is encountered, it may be confiscated and the matter will be referred to the appropriate conduct or administrative process, consistent with University policy and applicable law.

16) How does the University handle complaints or reports of concerning behavior involving students?
Reports are addressed through established University processes. When appropriate, the University may meet with involved parties and may issue no-contact directives. Violations of University directives or policies may result in escalated consequences.

17) How does the University handle non-students or unauthorized individuals on campus or in residence halls?
Individuals who are not authorized for a facility may be directed to leave and/or to follow the appropriate visitor procedures. When needed, the University may involve University Police and local law enforcement to address trespass, threats, or criminal activity.

Reporting, Information, and Support

18) How do I report a safety concern or an emergency?
Security concerns should be reported immediately to Campus Police Dispatch (ext. 6878). Emergencies should be reported by calling 9-1-1.

19) How does the University share safety information and meet Clery Act requirements?
Kentucky State University is in full compliance with the Clery Act. The University maintains established reporting channels that route incident reports to a central location for appropriate review and action, and it posts required campus safety and crime-related information through official University communications and the University website.

20) What support resources are available to students, faculty, and staff?
Counseling and support resources remain available. Those who need support are encouraged to visit kysu.edu/support or reach out to a trusted member of the campus community for assistance connecting to resources.

Care for One Another

We recognize that reactions to trauma can look different for each person. Some students may experience:

  • Shock, numbness, or disbelief

  • Heightened anxiety, fear, or difficulty sleeping

  • Sadness, grief, or emotional exhaustion

  • Trouble concentrating or feeling overwhelmed

  • A strong need for connection — or, conversely, a desire to withdraw

These responses are normal, valid, and deserving of care and compassion. Please continue to check on one another and reach out for support if you or someone you know is struggling.
