Dear Thorobred Family,

As we prepare to begin a new academic year, we have an opportunity to reflect not only on the work immediately before us but also on the larger purpose that brings us together. Each of us is privileged to play a role in preparing for the future through the work we do to educate, support, and inspire the next generation.

That responsibility has guided Kentucky State University for 140 years. As Kentucky’s only public HBCU and an 1890 land-grant university, we have expanded opportunity, strengthened communities, advanced knowledge, and prepared generations of students to lead and serve. Our mission has not changed. We are building upon it by strengthening how we prepare students for the opportunities of tomorrow.

On Monday, we will come together for the Fall Faculty and Staff Institute under the theme “The Promise, the Possibilities, and the Pathway.” Each part of that theme speaks to where we are as a University and where we are going together.

Our promise is rooted in our enduring mission and in the potential of every student who chooses Kentucky State. It is our commitment to provide an education that helps students belong, thrive, and succeed while preparing them to build meaningful careers, serve their communities, and contribute to a rapidly changing world.

Across the University, those possibilities are taking shape. From 2024 through 2028, Kentucky State is advancing approximately $170 million in state-supported investment to renew the facilities where students live and learn and strengthen our capacity to serve them. We are also strengthening academic programs, expanding opportunities for hands-on learning and applied research, and building upon Kentucky State’s growing research enterprise.

Together, these efforts reflect confidence in our mission and our ability to prepare graduates for the needs of tomorrow’s workforce while continuing to provide the broad educational foundation that has always defined a Kentucky State education.

Following this pathway requires disciplined implementation, responsible stewardship, and a shared commitment to student success. It also requires the expertise, collaboration, and dedication of our faculty and staff. Whether you educate and mentor students, advance research, maintain our campus, strengthen community partnerships, provide essential services, or support the many operations that sustain the University, your work helps shape what comes next.

Kentucky State’s future will be defined not only by the decisions we make but also by the collective commitment we bring to carrying them forward. Our future will be strongest when we build it together, honoring our history while creating new opportunities for the generations that will follow us.

I look forward to gathering with you on Monday and beginning this important year with clarity, purpose, and a renewed sense of shared responsibility. Together, we will continue preparing students for the future and advancing the mission we share.

Onward and Upward,

Koffi C. Akakpo, Ph.D.
