Members of the Kentucky State University 1972 NAIA championship men’s basketball team were recently honored by the Kentucky General Assembly, with citations from the House and Senate.
The 1971-72 Thorobreds won their third consecutive NAIA championship that season. According to the citation, this historic feat made Kentucky State the third of only three major programs to hold such a distinction. From 1970 until 1975, the Thorobreds were second only to UCLA for the most wins in college basketball.
“I would be remiss if I didn’t make note of the fact that I'm a graduate of Kentucky State University,” State Senator Gerald A. Neal said. “I also would be remiss if I did not express that this is an example of the best of Kentucky State University. I personally applaud them and I know that we all join in that applause.”
