Kentucky State University alumnus named interim athletic director

A Kentucky State University alumnus was recently named interim athletic director for the University.

Ramon C. Johnson, a former football and track and field student-athlete at Kentucky State, will take the helm as interim director.

A member of the 4x100 meter relay team that competed in the NCAA Division II national championship in 1992, Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education with a minor in recreation. Johnson later earned a master’s degree in education from McKendree University in Illinois.

During his career, Johnson served as associate athletic director with Dayton Public Schools, where he was instrumental in creating processes to better serve the students, coaches and community. In addition, he assisted in retaining eligibility with the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OSHAA).

As a project manager, Johnson spearheaded a $14 million renovation of Perc Welcome Stadium and other high school facilities throughout the district.

Johnson also previously served as assistant athletic director of athletic compliance at East St. Louis Sr. High School.

Coaching has played a prominent role in Johnson’s career. Johnson has served as a football and track and field coach at multiple schools and levels, enjoying much success along the way.

Johnson said he hopes to align athletics with the University’s mission; entice student-athletes, premier coaches and partners; involve students, faculty, staff, administration, parents and the community in the development process of the athletic program; organize strategies to produce measurable outcomes; and unite these efforts to create a better Kentucky State.
