Going Beyond the Classroom
Undergraduate students explore agriculture during Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration
Farm visit
On Thursday, March 20, 2025, a group of 18 undergraduate students from the College
of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources visited the Kentucky State University
(KSU) Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm where they engaged in practical
hands-on activities such as soil classification and sampling as well as environmental
monitoring using drones (Ag-Technology).
Topics discussed during the workshop also included soil and water quality and management,
sustainable agricultural practices such as organic farming and use of cover crops,
and career opportunities in the field of agriculture, natural resources, and related
fields.
The visit was led by Dr. Sait Sarr who emphasized the importance of exposing students
to hands-on experiential learning opportunities and research beyond the classroom.
“We want to inspire more of our undergraduates to delve further into our graduate
programs or career fields in agriculture, natural resources, and related fields. These
activities will not only provide opportunities that will bridge the gap between theoretical
knowledge and practical application, but also provide skills that are fundamental
in other sectors such as water and energy management,” said Dr. Sarr.
“These hands-on experiences will benefit students, especially as they prepare to enter
the workforce and develop into socially responsible professionals. Our students are
being exposed to innovations that are shaping the future of agriculture and sustainability
which will provide them a competitive advantage since many industries rely on technological
solutions to enhance efficiency and productivity,” he continued.
KSU faculty and research staff guided field trips, experiential learning opportunities,
student-run farms and other hands-on demonstrations exemplify the University’s commitment
to student success and career readiness.
