Kentucky State University Celebrates a “Sensational” Founders’ Day Convocation
Kentucky State University (KSU) students, faculty, staff, alumni, and distinguished guests came together in Bradford Hall to celebrate the Founders’ Day Convocation on Friday, October 4, 2024. The remarkable event honored the rich, 138-year history of the university as well as celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Golden Class of 1974 and the 90th anniversary of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated’s Alpha Pi Chapter at KSU.
Alumna and Mayor of Evansville, IN, Stephanie Terry, class of 1998, was the keynote speaker for the prestigious convocation.
“We come together not just as individuals but as a part of something remarkable - a legacy, a movement, a family. This isn’t just any university, this is our Kentucky State University,” said Terry. “A place where greatness is born, where it’s nurtured and sent out into the world. And today I’m here to remind you, to celebrate with you, and to say loudly: Great things come out of KSU because we are "Sensational."
In her address, Terry emphasized the significance of KSU, the sensational spirit that lives within every Thorobred, and how that spirit compels Thorobreds “onward” and “upward” into greatness.
“Each of us has a unique path, one filled with potential, purpose, and the ability to make a meaningful impact. And this university, from its founding to today, has been the catalyst for helping us realize that potential and unlock the greatness within,” said Terry. “From Hathaway Hall to the fields of Alumni Stadium, KSU has shaped leaders, innovators, and trailblazers; individuals who have taken their education and experiences they gained here and transformed industries, communities, and the world.”
She continued, “Let’s honor our founders and this great university by living the motto in all that we do: Onward and Upward – to success, to greatness, and to making a difference in our individual communities.”
Aury Rios-Alcantara, 2024-2025 Student Government Association President, led the community in the Thorobred Oath, testifying to the shared bond between all Thorobreds and their united commitment to support the “betterment of those who are around me and others who come after me.”
Ms. Sharon “Pat” Taylor, class of 1974, provided the Golden Class response and reflected on the pivotal moment in 1972 when then Kentucky State College evolved to become Kentucky State University. The Golden Class of 1974 became the second class to graduate from The Kentucky State University.
Following the Golden Class response, the KSU Gospel Choir and alumni joined together to perform the song, “His Mercy Endureth Forever,” inspiring the audience to reflect on the long legacy of KSU and their respective journeys.
In his address, KSU President, Dr. Koffi C. Akakpo, congratulated the Golden Class and reflected on the significance of their homecoming for their 50th anniversary.
“Your journey from graduation up to now is a testimony to the solid education, resilience, and Thorobred spirit you received at KSU and we are so grateful for the ways you have honored Mother KSU through your advocacy of and generosity back to our students,” he said.
Again, congratulations to our Golden Class of 1974. May you live every day like it’s golden!
