Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry is a trailblazer, a leader whose roots run deep in the city she loves. Born and raised in Evansville, Mayor Terry embodies dedication, perseverance, and the power of community. After graduating from Bosse High School, she pursued her passion for science and service at Kentucky State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. At KSU, she was actively involved in campus life, singing in the concert choir and becoming a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority through the Alpha Pi Chapter, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. She later earned her Master’s in health service administration from the University of Evansville, always driven by a desire to uplift others and strengthen the places she calls home.

Her journey of leadership began early, serving as the first Deputy Director of Carver Community Organization, where she oversaw life-changing programs for children, seniors, and families. Her heart for service only grew as she took the helm at the Children’s Museum of Evansville (cMoe), leading with vision and purpose. Under her 13-year tenure as Executive Director, Mayor Terry spearheaded efforts that enriched the lives of hundreds of thousands of children and their families, making the museum a beacon of learning, creativity, and growth. Before leaving cMoe, she led a $6.5 million capital campaign that will transform cMoe into an essential attraction in the city.

But Mayor Terry’s impact reaches far beyond her work in the nonprofit sector. In 2010, she was appointed to serve on the Vanderburgh County Council, breaking barriers as the first African American and first woman to hold the position. Through her integrity and determination, she won the trust of the people, being re-elected three times before making history yet again—becoming Evansville’s first African American and first female mayor in November 2023.

Since becoming mayor in January, she has embraced bold leadership with a clear focus on the people and places that make Evansville unique. From securing historic raises for city employees to advocating for revitalization projects and affordable housing, Mayor Terry has remained steadfast in her mission to build a stronger, more vibrant city.

Outside of City Hall, Mayor Terry’s commitment to service was just as strong. Whether through her past work with organizations like Southwestern Behavioral Healthcare, YWCA, or her role as Indiana State Coordinator for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Mayor Terry consistently pushed boundaries and lifted up others along the way.

Her leadership and achievements have earned her numerous accolades, but for Mayor Terry, the greatest honor lies in her deep connection to her community and her unwavering dedication to making a difference. Together with her husband, Marques, and their three children, Mayor Terry is proud to worship at Memorial Baptist Church. Her passions for family, music, and creativity keep her grounded as she continues to lead with purpose, vision, and love for the people she serves.
