The Area of Music offers the Bachelor of Arts in Music degree and the Bachelor of Music in Performance and the Bachelor of Music Education degrees. All Music degrees require 120 semester credit hours of studies in music, music electives, free electives, and for the Music Education degree, studies in music education and professional education. Kentucky State University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
The goals of the Music Unit are to:
- Prepare students to make significant contributions to society as artists and teachers through its major degree program;
- Provide courses and experiences in support of the institution’s Liberal Studies Mission, its unique diversity and heritage and the requirements of other academic units for service courses;
- Produce and sponsor a variety of cultural activities in the arts including concerts, workshops, recitals, and lectures; and
- Support and encourage its faculty members to develop and exhibit their professional and creative abilities through participation in research, in exhibitions, competitions, recitals, presentations, publications, consultation, and similar activities.

The division additionally offers the following Short-term Certificate programs:
Divisional Certificate in Music and Culture of the African Diaspora
Divisional Certificate in Music Industry and Production
All candidates in the Bachelor of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Music in Performance degree programs must successfully complete either the University Liberal Studies Core & Integrative Studies Requirements (42 credit hours) or the Whitney Young School Honors Core (45 credit hours). All candidates in the Bachelor of Music Education program must successfully complete either the University Liberal Studies Core Requirements (36 credit hour option) or the Whitney Young School Honors Core.
Kentucky State University also offers the Minor in Music Performance degree, which includes courses in theory, history, and piano as well as study within an applied area and work within one of the performing ensembles.
