Professional Experience

1998-Present. Principal Investigator of Horticulture, Kentucky State University, Frankfort, KY.

Research About 80% of our research effort is focused toward developing pawpaw [Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal] as a new commercial crop, with the remaining 20% of our research effort directed toward primocane blackberry, gooseberry, currant, grape, and peach variety trials.  Our pawpaw research effort includes: 1) conducting a variety trial at KSU in cooperation with other sites across the nation, 2) examining flowering, fruit set, and ripening, 3) improving clonal and seedling/rootstock propagation methods, and 4) characterizing the morphological and molecular variation in the germplasm collection, and 5) developing organic production methods. I have cooperative research projects with Dr. Robert Geneve on in vitro clonal propagation of pawpaw and with Dr. Douglas Archbold on pawpaw postharvest physiology; both are researchers at in the Dept. of Horticulture at the University of Kentucky (UK).

Extension activities: I have  replied to over 1000 emails, letters, and telephone calls over the last 10 years, visited grower sites, and organized one to two field days each year. I conceptualized and chaired the Second International Pawpaw Conference in 2001. Over 140 people attended the conference from 22 states and the proceedings were published in HortTechnology. I developed a pawpaw information website (http://www.pawpaw.kysu.edu) that has had over 250,000 visitors since 1999 which was recognized as an outstanding horticultural extension publication by Southern Region-American Society for Horticultural Science in 2000.

Teaching and Mentoring Students: BIO 495: Understanding Biotechnology (3 credits lecture/laboratory)-developed and taught course to over 30 undergraduate students from 2005-2008; BIO 410: Special Problems in Biology (2 credits) - mentored 16 undergraduate students in research projects since 1998. These students have won state (Kentucky Academy of Science) and national (ARD) awards for their research presentations. Dr. Pomper’s students: Mr. Shawn Brown (2000), Mr. Lamin Mbye (2003), and Danielle Rascoe (2003) received awards for oral or poster presentations at ARD Symposiums. He has mentored 2 postdoctoral researchers and served on the committees of 4 KSU Aquaculture MS graduate students.

1998-Present. Curator, USDA National Clonal Germplasm Repository for Asimina spp., Kentucky State University,  Frankfort, KY. Maintenance and acquisition of  Asimina spp. germplasm collection. As a satellite site of the repository at Corvallis OR, the KSU orchards contain more than 2000 accessions from 66 distinct geographic regions from 17 different states. This is the largest pawpaw germplasm collection in the world.

2008-Present. Adjunct Associate Professor of Horticulture, University of Kentucky. I co-advise graduate students and have cooperative research projects with members of the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Kentucky. I also guest lecture in fruit production courses and assist the department in other horticultural research and extension matters.

1998-2008. Adjunct Assistant Professor of Horticulture, University of Kentucky.

1996-1998. Post-doctoral Research Associate, USDA-ARS, Children's Nutrition Research Center. Examination of the transport and storage of calcium in green bean pods; increasing bioavalable calcium levels to benefit the nutritional needs of humans.

1995-1996. Post-doctoral Researcher, Oregon State University. Identification of molecular markers for self- incompatibility alleles in hazelnut.

Splendid Table Home Eating Appalachian | Listen,   March 8, 2003
We're eating Appalachian this week with food writers Ted and Matt Lee, two brothers who rented a pickup truck and headed for the back roads of Eastern Kentucky in search of the elusive pawpaw fruit. Along the way, they discovered that good food is more about human ingenuity than rich resources. Read more about their adventure in the article "On the Appalachian Trail" in the March 2002 issue of Food & Wine magazine.
