The Founding of Lifelong Learning and Community Engagement at KSU

The path of life is a quest to find knowledge, wherever the location of that knowledge (LS).

The University recognizes that modern education requires institutions to be nimble and to be able to read the socio-cultural contexts in which it operates.  Students who have to work, and workers who desire to study, often face challenges to meet the traditional higher education semester timetable.  In the summer of 2017, KSU will launch its new Institute Lifelong Learning.

Goals and Objectives

The Institute’s primary work is to fulfil the institution’s strategic goals 3 and 4.

Goal 3- Foster Strategic Partnership and Outreach for Community Impact.

The Institute work is to execute this goal to engage the city of Frankfort in an active and robust way, informed by learning opportunities and intellectual activities.  Partnerships are expected to include both private and government agencies and the outcome is expected to be symbiotically beneficial. The chief outcomes are:

  • To see a measured boost in the image of KSU as Frankfort’s University both in the city of Frankfort and in the region.
  • Articulate at least two agreements with partners to establish initial short programs with subsequent relationships steered to a rolling basis.

Goal 4- Strengthen Organizational Infrastructure to Promote Optimum Efficiency and Operational Output with Attention to Sustainability.

Objective 4.1 of this goal speaks to the work of the institute that focusses on skill and professional development of its in-house community- faculty, and staff.  The objective demands the development of a work environment that provides training and development opportunities for faculty and staff geared to efficiency of operational output.  The Institute will step up to fulfill this role and will seek to ensure the maturation of this professional and training culture on campus.

Implementing Life-Long Learning

Beginning fall 2016, the Institute will begin drafting its strategic plan, will develop its agenda for the spring promotion of classes for summer 2017, and most importantly, will begin developing its compendium for donor relations, soliciting gift-giving individuals, and networking for attractive and beneficial partnerships.

Continuing Education Program Formats

The Institute will provide three tracks of educational programming:

  1. In House – KSU Citizens Support, Development, and Training modules for Faculty and Staff
  2. In-house training of Faculty and Staff on cutting edge practices related to student academic success could further Faculty Development programs, Roundtables, like a Teaching Roundtable focusing on cutting edge teaching pedagogies and learning analytics, could be a start.  An initiate last fall on faculty teaching in the accelerated program, yielded negligible outcomes but sufficient to indicate that, except for a few instances we have no quantitative data to measure the success of teaching effectiveness. This is a fresh start with different constituencies to do experimental workshops exploring paradigms in learning analytics, developing a KSU brand for a learning model. We would provide incentives such as filming the class, to documenting the lesson, to publishing a piece in State Journal highlighting focus on this approach with examples, to VPAA acknowledging classroom achievement through paper certificate, or modest money awards.  If you consider this a conflict with some other agenda, we can name it “professional development”.

 

  1. Continued staff training, development and improvement on knowledge product, operational efficiency including speed and accuracy, across all staff units, and front office customer relations upkeep. Creating a culture of professional development for staff is being acknowledged by many in higher education as critical to the longevity of the institution. Recall I’ve always maintained the lifeblood of good management on campus rests with the staff so the CE agenda plans to include professional learning opportunities to maximize and encourage both management and leadership skills in its KSU citizens support development and training  This way we can draw up succession plans and avoid disruptions, humps, and learning curves.

 

  1. Online technology training modules are to be included in this agenda that Continuing Education will drive. I am recommending students, learning through technology, be evaluated against learning gestalts and a program be developed for CE to also do training with them. Post recovery benchmark activities in Higher Ed requires close attention to containing costs and justifying how the costs inputted, result in value added and a return in investment. Student learning online performance need data indicators to gauge and measure the level of learning, and to respond to the system and student challenges.

 

  1. Engaging the School District (Community) in the Advancement of Teaching and Learning across the Life Spectrum
    1. Partnering with K-12 to build “improvement knowledge” (Carnegie Foundation model).
    2. Invite cohorts of grade teachers to weekend/one day seminars to get better at doing well (learning analytics; interventions, and long-term assessment and evaluation).
    3. Invite cohorts of headmasters to do weekend/one day seminars (i) “transitioning headmasters into higher education”; “why headmasters should generate and use big data”; “why metrics help student success”; and to how to use metrics to align teacher and student success.
    4. Strategic methodology- Announce free introductory 45 min sessions- three weeks later announce a credit optional three one hour sessions (will work out the math for the credit). Invite area headmasters. Good publicity for us and the school while helping selected K-12 schools. School of Ed to be engaged in this project.  Another plus and a win for engaging one of the strategic objectives-2020.

Larger community engagement

  1. Continuing Education and Life Long Learning would identify and direct qualified students into graduate study by working with Alumni Relations and through a hold on students taking classes for leisure learning.
  2. Re-entry Students- Continuing Education would identify and direct qualified students into undergraduate programs investigating whether prior credit can be applied for matriculation and re-entry.
  3. Gathering and using the data on undergraduate and graduate cohorts who have not completed their degrees. We will investigate whether current work experience can be applied to prior learning credit and qualify for matriculation and re-entry.

 

  1. New Sponsored Partnerships and Articulated Agreements with Community, Business, and Government Agencies

This is an investment program that will require careful and strategic communication with potential partners/entrepreneurs to deliver our objectives.  This will require a fairly clean modern face; and the core of its deliverables is its entrepreneurial networks and closing the deals on partnerships.

This community piece will include Development/Advancement work and this piece of the program will:

  1. Develop agreements between area businesses and the University for employees to earn college credit towards a degree, certificate, or diploma
  2. Establish and sustain community relations to engender new partnerships in donor giving for the institute’s/center’s programs
  3. Establish a database for potential donors for us to begin outreach and promotion for subsequent meetings and campus exchanges
  4. Develop a plan for community engagement, specifically geared to donor giving, and estimate the ROI of projected returns from donors
  5. Be mindful to use predictive analytics to for all course teaching to promote adult students’ success
  6. Pursue sponsorships and agreement with local companies like Mc. Donald where we can partner with them to provide content- meaning the will purchase our content- and webinar them over a period of time to their employees so these employees can earn college credit. This will be done the proposal is developed and put to them.  We will need better space in which to negotiate in order to encourage investors to sign on.
  7. Other businesses (and government agencies) to follow same approach

The rest of this platform (TRACK 3) constitutes a dynamic multiple curricular offering of a variety of courses whose categories include the following five (5) curricula

Leisure and Sports Curriculum- dance and yoga

Functional Curriculum for such relevant skills as Spanish for Realtors, ESOL, Legal Aid clinics, Farm clinics and Real Estate Seminars for continuing education units (CEU’s).

A GED and a Weekend Immersion Core workshop Curriculum

Week-End College for Credit Curriculum offering a pathway to matriculation and degree options.

All Aged Community Engagement Curricula on Family Oral Histories on Film and a signature program called Life Long Learning Lecture Series.

 

Semester Structure

The Institute will offer weekend courses in the form of seminars to be completed within specified contact hours to be determined.

The Institute will host weekend courses for six weekends for a total of specified contact hours to be determined.

The Institute will offer weekly classes for six weeks for a total of specified contact hours to be determined hours for appropriate credit.

Curriculum

The curriculum will include both credit and non-credit courses.  Courses will be offered following the curricula in Track 3 established above for skill building, professional development, and community engagement; for brushing up on a new skill, needing to study the basics of a course before entering or re-entering baccalaureate study; or a desire to learn or pick up a new hobby for leisure learning.

Examples of courses in curriculum categories:

Sports and Leisure- Yoga, dance, Capoeira

Mixed Leisure and Skill and Proficiency development –Dinner and a Movie, Supper with Spanish

Functional Skills curriculum- Spanish for Realtors, ESL, Legal Aid clinics, Farm Clinics, Real Estate Seminars.

Support Pathway Curriculum- Immersion Core workshops –offering weekend immersion study in writing, math and critical thinking skills

Entrepreneurship and Leadership curriculum- Business Incubator, Project Management, Public Policy and Continuing Administrative Training for staff in government agencies.

The Weekend College- pathway to KSU –matriculating into KSU degree programs with the Associate degree- “The Blues and its influence on Jazz”; “Kentucky River Eco-system”; “What’s up with Dorothy and where exactly is she now?” “How is it that I am the Government?” “ Photos of My Family: Also Guggenheim and Ansel Adams”

 

 

 

 

 

Community Engagement curriculum- Family Oral Histories on Film, and The Life Long Learning Series

A driving activity on the Track 3 Multiple curricula wheel is the search for sponsorship and partnership support for these curricula.  The In-house Advisory Council will design the framework within which an External Advisory Board will convene fundraising activities.
