The Kentucky State University football team will open its 2014 season with a home game against Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday, Sept. 4, at Alumni Stadium. The game against the Panthers, which is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff, will be surrounded by several pregame festivities.
Making its first halftime appearance this season, the Mighty Marching Thorobreds will also pep up the fans during a pep rally at the KSU track adjacent to Alumni Stadium starting at 5 p.m.
Each Thorobred home game during the 2014 football campaign has a specific theme. The theme for the game against Kentucky Wesleyan is “Faculty/Staff and Alumni Appreciation.” All faculty and staff with a valid university ID will be able to attend the game for free and will be recognized during the game. All Kentucky State alumni will also be admitted for free with a valid Alumni Association ID card.
Kentucky State alumni chapters in Lexington, Frankfort, Louisville, Cincinnati, Shelbyville and Paris have all been invited to the game with each chapter receiving 10 additional tickets.
Kentucky State athletics will also recognize some distinctive alumni by making them honorary captains for tonight’s game. The following alumni will accompany the Kentucky State football captains before the game and present the coin to be flipped before kickoff.
Honorary Alumni Captains:
Ms. Debra Gerton (president of the Frankfort Alumni Chapter)
Mrs. Corneila Calhoun (secretary of the KSU National Alumni Association)
Randolph Williams (president of the K-Club)
Dr. George Moore (immediate past president of the KSU National Alumni Association)
Besides the pregame events, there will also be several in-game activities. Between the first and second quarters of the game, the 62 Kentucky State student-athletes that have earned a grade point average of 3.0 or higher will be recognized on the field.
At halftime, 15 members of the Kentucky State faculty and staff will be honored for their service to Kentucky State University. Also, the 2013-14 Kentucky State men’s golf team will receive their 2014 SIAC Championship rings.
