Select A Career

Posted By Carlos Clark On May 8, 2014 @ 6:40 pm In | Comments Disabled

Like any major decision, selecting a career involves a lot of fact finding. Fortunately, some of the best informational resources are easily accessible. For example, The U.S. Department of Labor [1] annually publishes the Occupational Outlook Handbook [2] which provides career information about hundreds of occupations:

In addition to The U.S. Department of Labor, Kentucky State University’s Office of Career Counseling and Placement [6]  has a number of resources available to help you choose a major that’s a great fit for you.   Individual counseling sessions may be arranged to help students and alumni clarify career interests, values and work-related skills; explore potential careers and employers; and refine job seeking, interviewing, and resume preparation skills. To schedule an appointment with a counselor, click here [7].

Online Sources from the Department of Labor

Some career assessment sources exist primarily as a Web service. These sources often have information on specific jobs and can greatly aid in the job-hunting process. Some commercial sites offer Web services, as do federal, state, and some local governments. CareerOneStop [8], a joint program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor and the states as well as local agencies, provides these services free of charge.

A major resource in the U.S. Department of Labor’s Labor Market Information System is the CareerOneStop [8] site. This site includes links to the following sources:

  • U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics [9] (BLS). The BLS publishes a wide range of labor market information, from regional wages for specific occupations to statistics on national, state, and area employment. For more information, see the section on occupational wage data [10].
  • O*net Online [11] provides occupational information, including descriptors on hundreds of occupations.
  • My Next Move [12] is specifically designed to help  you determine the right career for you, and to help you find a job that you will enjoy.
  • My Next Move for Veterans [13].  Are you a veteran looking for work?  My Next Move for Veterans helps you find a civilian career similar to your military job.
  • State job banks [14] allow you to search job openings listed with state employment agencies.
  • America’s Career InfoNet [15] provides data on employment growth and wages by occupation; the knowledge, skills, and abilities required by an occupation; and links to employers.
  • America’s Service Locator [16] is a comprehensive database of career centers and information on unemployment benefits, job training, and educational opportunities.
