Retention Management and Advising Services (RMAS) represents one of three major areas within the Division of Student Success and Enrollment Management at KSU. The departments that comprise Retention Management and Advising Services are: Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), Center for Academic Persistence and Success (CAPS), Placement, Testing, Career Preparation, and Student Support Services (SSS). The goal of this comprehensive area is to increase student retention rates and persistence to graduation with a focus on academic success and achievement through intrusive, early intervention, academic support programming, and systematic tracking of students from matriculation to graduation.

RMAS provides academic support programming and services to improve the academic success of KSU students. Through both academic and non-academic services, RMAS seeks to enrich skills to increase student success, decrease the number of students being placed on academic actions at Kentucky State University, promote academic excellence, and improve timely graduation. RMAS departments also monitor the academic progression of students through their matriculation.


Message from the Assistant Vice President of Retention Management & Advising Services

Greetings Students, Parents, Faculty, Staff, and Administrators:

Welcome to Retention Management and Advising Services, one of three major areas within the Division of Student Success and Enrollment Management, at Kentucky State University. As the Assistant Vice President, I encourage students to set high expectations, work hard, take advantage of university resources, and to be productive both inside and outside of the classroom.  We provide support for all students to enable them to successfully meet their personal, academic, and professional objectives throughout their college experience.

Retention Management and Advising Services houses 4 administrative departments: Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), Center for Academic Persistence and Success (CAPS), Placement, Testing, Career Preparation, and Student Support Services (SSS). Each of these departments provides a broad-range of programs and services that support the educational experience of students such as: academic advisement, counseling, peer tutoring, academic success workshops, graduate and professional school testing, peer mentoring, and specialized services for specific populations, included but not limited to: adult and commuter students, first-generation and low-income college students. Professional advisors and counselors monitor the academic, career and personal goals/needs of students and provide individual guidance and assistance. Retention resources are also made available to faculty, staff, and parents. At Kentucky State University, we believe that “Student Success is Our Success.”

Mission and Goals

As a unit of the Division of Student Success and Enrollment Management, and in partnership with the faculty, university staff, administration, students, and the greater academic community, Retention Management and Advising Services supports the mission of Kentucky State University to prepare a diverse student population of traditional and non-traditional students to compete in a multifaceted, ever changing global society by providing student-centered learning while integrating teaching, research, and service through high quality undergraduate and select programs.

The Area of Retention Management and Advising Services strives to foster a student-centered experience by providing the resources, programs, and academic support necessary to build a foundation for academic success and to empower students to take an active role in their learning, hence improving student retention and graduation at Kentucky State University.

RMAS Mission Statement

The primary mission of the Area of Retention Management and Advising Services within the Division of SSEM is to increase student retention rates and persistence to graduation with a focus on student success through intentional and intrusive early intervention, academic support programming, and systematic tracking of students from recruitment to graduation.


RMAS 5-Year Strategic Goals & Objectives

  1. To increase student retention, progression, and timely degree completion.
    • Improve fall-to-fall freshman to sophomore retention rates by 10 percentage points.
    • Promote 6-year degree completion of new cohorts and monitor progress checkpoints.
    • Improve 6-year graduation rates by 6 percentage points.
    • Improve inter- and intra-divisional collaboration to increase the success of transfer students.
  2. To decrease the number of students with academic action.
    • Reduce the number of students with academic actions (probation, suspension, dismissal) by 10%.
    • Reduce the number of students who are not succeeding academically at midterm by 50%.
    • Improve pass rates of students in developmental and gateway courses with historically 30% or higher failure rates.
