Candidate for President: Venita A. Hawkins

Venita A. Hawkins, elected Kentucky State University National Alumni Association’s seventeenth President in 2014, has held several positions within the association, including Vice President/Program Committee Chair (two terms), and Treasurer/Finance Committee Chair (two terms). She has been successful in establishing goals for the association to ensure progress and enhancing national alumni programs/events.  She has engaged senior and young alumni in the implementation of critical university programs and activities. She has initiated several alumni initiatives to assist the university in student recruitment, and raising student scholarships. Her vision for KSUNAA is to grow the association bigger, bolder, better and brighter by inspiring innovation and growing leaders.

Some of the organizations that she is actively involved in are: The All in the Family Toastmasters Club (President), the National HBCU Alumni Association, LLC (Treasurer), Kentucky State University Foundation Board of Trustees, National Association of Parliamentarians, National Organization of College Parents (Financial Manager), the Fairfax County Alternative Dispute Resolution Appeals Board, and the Fairfax County Facilitation Network. She is a life member of KSUNAA and a proud member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.  Additionally, she has served as Treasurer of the African American Adoptions, Inc., and Steering Committee Member for the Community Collaborative on the Disproportionality of Services offered to African American families.

Her professional career includes 30 years of experience as a Finance and Budget Professional. Hawkins currently serves as a Fiscal Review Specialist in County Government, where she manages a budget of more than $25 million. A native of Washington, D.C., Hawkins graduated from Kentucky State University in 1984 and earned a Master’s degree in Financial Management from Southeastern University.


Candidate for Vice President: Kimberley Reed Thompson, Esq.

Attorney Kimberley Reed Thompson is Vice-President of the KSUNAA. She Chairs the Program Committee and Detroit Summer Weekend 2016. She also chaired Detroit Summer Weekend 2004, 1998, and 1990.  For more than 30 years she has been an active member of the KSUNAA and is a life member. She has held several appointed offices and been a member of every committee of the organization. She has financially supported all major initiatives. She earned the Distinguished Thorobred award from the Midwest Region in 1996 and was the Homecoming Convocation speaker in 2008.  She graduated from KSU in 1978 with a B.S. in Political Science and has a J.D. from Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C., (1981), and an L.L.M. (masters of law) in corporations and finance law from Wayne State University School of Law in Detroit, Michigan (1995).

Kimberley began her legal career in 1982 as a Public Defender. Since 1992 she has been employed with the 3rd Circuit Criminal Division of the Wayne County Circuit Court in Detroit. She is the legal advisor to the 29 judges of the criminal bench and over 300 staff persons. The criminal division processes over 25,000 felony cases per year.  She supervises the courts’ legal research attorneys.  Each summer she facilitates an internship program for high school, college, paralegal and law students interested in pursuing a career in criminal law. She is an elected member of the State Bar of Michigan Criminal Law Section Council. In 2015 she was appointed to the State Bar Character and Fitness Committee and serves in the capacity of bar counsel.

Kimberley is a Golden Life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., initiated through the Alpha Pi chapter in 1975. She is a member of the Detroit Alumnae Chapter Social Action Committee. In 2015 she co-chaired an Expungement Fair which assisted over 1,200 Detroit residents in filing applications to set aside criminal convictions. This year she will facilitate E-fair’s in Flint and Benton Harbor, Michigan as well as in Detroit.  Attorney Thompson is the 2nd Vice-President of Delta Service Through Detroit Foundation, Inc., (DSTDFI) which owns the largest tract of land used for secular purposes by African Americans in the city of Detroit and an Upscale Resale store which redistributes its’ proceeds to the community through public service grants.  She is an active member of the Oak Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church serving in the Women’s Missionary Society, Liturgical Dance, Women’s Choir, Michigan Conference Choir and Christian Education ministries.


Candidate for Secretary: Shayla L. Watson

Shayla L. Watson is a third generation graduate of Kentucky State University. She attended KSU from 1998 to 2002 as a USDA/1890 National Scholar and received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. In addition to being an honors student in the Whitney M. Young Honors College, Shayla participated in the Thorobred Marching Band and holds membership in Tau Beta Sigma, National Honorary Band Sorority.  Upon graduation, Shayla joined the KSU Lexington Alumni Chapter and served as a fundraising chair and aided in creating an electronic alumni database for the chapter.  Shayla has served as an officer in every position of the KSU DC Metro Area Alumni Chapter and is currently the Immediate Past President.

As a member of the KSUNAA, she serves as the chair of the newly created Social Media and Communications Committee and as the secretary of the PAS (Permeant Alumni Scholarship) Committee.  Through the Social Media Committee, she works to improve the distribution of official KSUNAA communications. She has created social media accounts for KSUNAA on many sites. These media platforms have allowed KSUNAA and all KSU Alumni Chapters to share information with those connected online and reach those not yet active with the Alumni Association. These accounts have also attracted potential donors and future students.

Shayla also serves as an alumni recruiter at college fairs throughout the Washington, DC area promoting our Alma Mater.  Her dedication to public service led to Shayla being honored as a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Steve Beshear. All in all, whether volunteering, chairing a committee, recruiting alumni or future students or coordinating a program or project, Shayla L. Watson takes pride in getting the job done and done well.

Candidate for Secretary: Lois V. Mockabee

Lois V. Mockabee is currently serving as a member of the program committee of the KSUNAA.  She graduated from Kentucky State University in 1988 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Computer Science with a concentration in Micro Computers and from Antioch University in 1995 with a Masters of Arts in Management.  In 2014 she earned a Master’s Certification in Configuration Management in Enterprise Configuration Management from the Configuration Management Process Improvement Center sponsored by the University of Houston.

She is a life member of the KSUNAA and is currently a member of the Program Committee and has previously served as the co-chair of the Summer Weekend Committee, Member of the Recognition & Achievements Committee, the co-chair of the Washington D.C. Summer Weekend 2006, initiator of the KSU Young Thorobreds, Vice President (Midwest Region), Secretary (Midwest Region), Member of the Constitution & By-Laws Committee (Midwest Region), Vice President, Secretary of the Dayton Alumni Chapter.  Lois has been a delegate to the national alumni conferences in 1990, 1993, 1995, and 1996 after relocating to Virginia she then attended the as an attendee in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2006, 2008, and 2012.

Lois is a diamond life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and was initiated through the Alpha Pi chapter in 1984.  She is currently a member of the Fort Washington, MD Alumnae chapter where she recently served as a Steering Member and Chair of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. 2015 Area Wide Founders Day Choir, Past Co-Chairman of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Dayton Alumnae Chapter Annual Debutante Ball.  She is an active member of the Alfred Street Baptist Church where she serves as a member and the secretary for the Trinity Choir, member of the Psalms of Praise Choir, women’s day choir and a member of the church decorating committee.


Candidate for Treasurer: Renee Reed Micou

Renee Reed Micou graduated from Kentucky State University with her B.S. Degree in May 1973.  She received a M.A. Ed. from Tennessee State University in August 1974, where she was inducted into Kappa Omicron Phi National Honor Society. She taught one year in the Nashville Metropolitan School System, before relocating to Norfolk, Virginia and under Dr. Harrison Benjamin Wilson became the Grants Administrator at Norfolk State University.  She was responsible for the administration of the Advanced Development Institutional Program and its eight million dollar budget. In addition, she successfully authored, submitted and defended a proposal to the Department of H.E.W., receiving an additional three million dollars. She was later employed by Ford Motor Company in Cincinnati, as the first Black Female Field Representative, traveling to dealerships across the Midwest assisting with their floor plans and inventory, before being transferred to Detroit. After retirement, she was a substitute teacher for nine years. She is employed as an Adjunct Professor for Wayne County Community College District, teaching Sociology, Humanities and Speech. She is also a published poet and author.

Renee was a member of the KSU Gospel Ensemble and was initiated into Beta Zeta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in 1970. She is a Life Member, a former member of Lambda Gamma Omega Chapter in Virginia Beach and is a member of Eta Iota Omega Chapter in Inkster, Michigan, having held numerous leadership positions from President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Assistant Treasurer, Parliamentarian, and Treasurer of the Service Builders Foundation, Incorporated for over eight years. She has held positions on the Regional and International levels since 1999.  She currently serves as the Treasurer of the Patillo Foundation.

An active member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, she is a member of the Praise Team, Praise Choral and Prayer Ministry and a former member of the Steward and Trustee Boards.  She is a Life Member of the KSUNAA. She serves on the Executive Committee of the Detroit Alumni Chapter and is the Parliamentarian. She worked diligently on the 2015 Midwest Regional Conference, serving as the Registration Chairperson.  She was a delegate at the Atlanta Summer Weekend in 2014. During Homecoming she facilitated the 2014 and 2015 Student/Alumni Meetings for Michigan students, serves as the Detroit Chapter Representative to the K-Club and presents the “Alonzo Croft Student Athlete Award” to outstanding student athletes. She facilitated the Detroit Chapter’s sponsoring of a work -study student in the Office of Alumni Affairs in 2015.  She is also working hard to ensure Detroit welcomes the KSUNAA Summer Weekend to Detroit in 2016, Detroit style.


Candidate for Treasurer: Herbert N. Watkins

Herb’s background includes an undergraduate degree (KSU’65) in business, a MBA degree, and a Ph.D. degree in Business.  He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).  He has had various experiences on several university campuses ranging from teaching to academic administration and non-academic administration.  He is the current Treasurer of the KSU National Alumni Association.

While in this position since 2010, endowment funds have been restored in the KSU Alumni Endowment and the KSU Endowment LIFE.  A constitution amendment was recommended and passed for the Treasurer to authorize expenditures.  Recently, Internal Controls suggestions, a proposed Expenditure Authorization Form and a proposed Chart of Accounts for the KSU National Alumni Association were approved by the Finance Committee on December 8, 2015 and the Executive Committee on January 23, 2016 which will improve controls and accounting operations.

Herb is serving as the Chair of first Audit Committee of KSU Foundation Board of Trustees 2012 to present and is Chair of the Finance Subcommittee of Permanent Alumni Scholarship (PAS) Fund Committee.

Candidate for Member-at-Large: Renee Patrice Gilliam

Renee Patrice Gilliam is a native of Hopewell, Virginia and a 1975 graduate of Kentucky State University with a B.A. in English and vocal music.  She also holds the Master of Education in Educational Media Production from Virginia State University and the Master of Sports Science in Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy.  Patrice’s diverse educational background affords her to use creative ideas and strategies to implement tasks in academic advisement/retention, promotions, marketing, fundraising, and athletic compliance.

Patrice has more than 38 years in an educational setting to include elementary, secondary and collegiate levels.  She has more than 12 years of teaching public school, and 26 years of collegiate administrative and teaching duties to include Kentucky State University. Patrice is a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Petersburg, Virginia where she is a member of the Senior Choir and serves as president of the Episcopal Church Women.

Patrice’s past experience at a Comprehensive Level I sister HBCU afforded her an opportunity to work with the Office of Alumni Affairs which fell under the umbrella of the Office of University Advancement. Patrice assisted in rewriting and organizing the duties of the Executive Board of the National Alumni Association. She served as editor of the White and Blue Alumni Newspaper.  As a Development Associate the duties as related to the Alumni Office included planning and implementing Alumni activities such as Summer National Convention and Homecoming.  From June of 1990 – September of 1990 Patrice served as the interim Alumni Affairs Director in the absence of the Alumni Director who was on medical leave.
