Gifts of Securities

Thank you for considering a gift of securities in support of Kentucky State University. Gifts of securities often confer significant tax benefits on a donor. For example, contributions of appreciated securities held for over a year are generally deductible at market value, regardless of what the donor paid for them; moreover, the capital gains tax is avoided through such a gift.

To Make a Gift of Securities
To notify Kentucky State University of a gift of securities, please contact Bill Wilson at bill.wilson@kysu.edu or (502)597-5365 with complete donor information (name, address, phone number), the name and type of securities to be gifted (public, private, restricted, mutual fund, etc.), the number of shares and the date you intend to make the gift.

Matching Gifts

Did you know that you can sometimes double your contribution to Kentucky State University? And it doesn’t cost you one extra cent.

Many companies sponsor matching gift programs that amplify the impact of their employees’ personal contributions without increasing the obligation of the individual donor. Most participating companies will match employee gifts dollar for dollar, and some will even double- or triple-match a gift.

Arrange a Match. It’s Easy.

Depending on your employer’s policy, matching gifts can typically be arranged in one of the following ways:

(1) By obtaining a matching gift form from your company or organization and mailing it, along with your gift, to the following address:

Kentucky State University
External Relations and Development
400 E. Main St.
Hume Hall, Suite. 102
Frankfort, KY 40601

(2) By providing your company with a receipt or acknowledgment from Kentucky State University that proves a gift was made.

(3) By registering your gift online through your company’s or organization’s website or by phone. For employer matching gift processes that do not require you to send us a form, please indicate that you have arranged a match for your gift when you send it to the university.
Please note that matching gifts will be directed to the same area of Kentucky State University as your personal gift, unless company policy dictates otherwise. Company matching gift policies vary; consult your company’s or organization’s policy for specific details.

Personal Check

Please make checks payable to Kentucky State University Foundation and mail, along with instructions regarding your gift designation, to the address listed above.

Planned or Deferred Gifts

Planned, or deferred, gifts can provide significant benefits to you and your loved ones now and in the future while offering financial support to Kentucky State University for generations to come. Some popular planned giving vehicles include bequests, gifts of retirement assets, gifts of life insurance, charitable gift annuities, deferred gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts and charitable remainder unitrusts. The Division of External Relations and Development will work with you and your financial advisers to create a gift plan that works for you. For more information, please contact Mr. Bill Wilson, Associate Vice President for Development and Major Gifts.

Gifts of Real Estate

Gifts of appreciated real estate can confer significant tax benefits on the donor, particularly if returns from the property are modest compared to the capital gains tax that would be levied if the property were sold. Donors of appreciated real estate may be able to deduct the full market value of the property. Gifts of real estate are subject to various legal regulations. For more information, contact Mr. Bill Wilson, Associate Vice President for Development and Major Gifts.

Gifts-in-Kind

Over the years, many individuals have donated artwork, book collections and other valuable personal property to the university. The Center of Excellence for the Study of Kentucky African Americans, in particular, has benefited dramatically from gifts-in-kind.

Gifts of tangible personal property are subject to various legal regulations. For more information, contact Mr. Bill Wilson, Associate Vice President for Development and Major Gifts.

Memorial Gifts

Benefactors often choose to memorialize or honor a special person by making a gift in his or her name. To make a memorial gift, please mail your check, payable to Kentucky State University Foundation, to:

Kentucky State University
External Relations and Development
400 E. Main St.
Hume Hall, Suite. 102
Frankfort, KY 40601

Please include with your contribution the honoree’s name and address, so that the university may notify that person of your thoughtfulness. In the case of a deceased honoree, please also include the name(s) and addresses of the family member(s) to whom you would like an acknowledgment sent, as well as their relationship to the deceased.

Typically, an acknowledgment letter will be sent to the donor (including IRS language), and then a letter will be sent to the honoree or honoree’s family. That letter will include the donor’s name and address, but not the gift amount.
