Ms. Rye received a B.F.A., with concentration in Painting and Sculpture, from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in 1972. She completed a M.F.A. in the innovative and selective Department of Experimental Studios, School of Visual and Performing Arts, Syracuse University in 1978.
As a trained multi-media artist, with a broad background in photography, installation, painting and sculpture, Ms. Rye teaches across the curriculum for the Art Area. Her primary instruction focus is Photography, Video, Digital Arts, Drawing, and Contemporary Art History. She initiated one of the first completely digital archival photography programs in the country in 2002 at KSU.
Her artistic specialty is installation/mixed media art with a Post-Modern emphasis on concept and explorations of cultural issues. Her installations often incorporate drawings with natural materials, found objects, photography (large scale archival serial photographs on fabric), video and writings. Ms. Rye is represented by Zephyr Gallery, Louisville, KY and is a past roster artist for the Kentucky Arts Council. She maintains an active regional and state-wide exhibition record and was awarded a competitive Al Smith Fellowship for artistic excellence in 2004 from the Kentucky Arts Council. Her work is in the collection of 21C Museum, Louisville and numerous corporate and individual collections.
Ms. Rye is committed to the professional development of student artists and incorporates field trips to major museums and galleries into the educational experience and serves as Exhibition Coordinator for the Art Area. She involves students whenever possible in her professional activities. Most recently, in collaboration with New York City based artist Rachel Seed, she completed a two year grant from the Louisville Center for Neighborhoods that included outdoor interactive installations at three sites in the Portland Community of Louisville and involved student participation.
