KSU celebrates the 125th Anniversary of The Second Morrill Act
In 2015 Kentucky State University, led by the College of Agriculture, Food Science and Sustainable Systems, will celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Second Morrill Act (1890), which established the university as a land-grant institution.

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Kentucky State University will celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Second Morrill Act, which established the university as the second land-grant institution in the state, with the 1890 Day Wellness Walk/Run on Thursday, April 23. Registration will open at 11:30 a.m. at the Cooperative Extension Building on KSU’s campus, and the walk/run will begin at noon. The community is invited to participate in this free event, which is part of a nationwide celebration on the campuses of all nineteen 1890 universities.
April 23, 2015, has been decreed 1890 Day, and all nineteen 1890 campuses will participate in a Wellness Walk/Run on that day. Participation is free, but KSU is welcoming donations of $18.90 or any other denomination to go toward student scholarships. Preregistration is not required to take part in the 1.89-mile walk/run event, but it is appreciated. Registered walkers and runners will receive a free T-shirt while supplies last. Events on campus in April honoring the 1890 university anniversary will include:
AFE Day – April 14 – Students from across Kentucky will visit KSU’s campus to learn more about its academic and research programs in agriculture, food and environment. Community partners will exhibit and campus tours will be available.
Earth Day – April 22 – 1890 Agriculture, Food and Environment Art Competition winners will be announced and the College of Agriculture, Food Science and Sustainable Systems will officially open KSU’s first nutrition and wellness program.
1890 Day – April 23 – KSU will celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Second Morrill Act with a campus-wide Wellness Walk/Run and other campus activities. This day will be observed by all nineteen 1890 universities.
1890 Day on the Hill – July 15-16 – (WASHINGTON D.C.) Faculty, staff and students from KSU will travel to Washington, D.C., for the national celebration between all nineteen 1890 universities. Look for more information regarding the national exhibit and how you can get involved.
As we celebrate this important anniversary, each Monday, beginning March 16, look for a historical fact about the Second Morrill Act and the history of the land-grant program in the Campus Announcements. These facts will outline the importance of Rep. Justin Morrill’s legislation and how it helped shape the foundation of Kentucky State University.
