Vacation Tips
Spring break is the time of year when college students, family and friends get together to decompress and have fun. Follow these simple tips to ensure that you will have a great time, and return to school and your home safely.
- Obey the local laws – This can result in a difficult legal situation which can cost you lots of money, time and possibly your job.
- Beach warning flags should be taken seriously – It seems like a no-brainer, but many drownings occur during Spring break when swimmers are overwhelmed by water conditions. If black or red flags are posted, do not enter the water. This means there is a strong undertow and rough surf along the beaches.
- Only use licensed and regulated taxis – Some taxis in tourist destinations aren’t legitimate. Unlicensed taxi drivers can take advantage of you financially and otherwise. If you’re not sure a taxi is legitimate, ask your hotel, club or restaurant staff.
- Do not carry weapons – Know the laws on carrying weapons, whether concealed or open-carry. It is best not to take a weapon with you into public.
- Do not purchase, sell or possess illegal drugs or prescription medicine – Drug charges in many places carry severe penalties and even jail time without bail for up to a year. Only carry medicines that are prescribed to you, in the correct bottle or container.
- Do not drink and drive – This is the time of year that many students get behind the wheel of car or into a car with a person who has been drinking. The penalties for a DUI charge or for injuring someone while drunk are severe. If you must drink, drink responsibly, and have a designated driver that you trust to stay sober. If you’ve been drinking, take cabs or use a ridesharing service like Uber or Lyft. Plan ahead and eat good meals. Avoid excessive drinking as it can lead to alcohol poisoning.
- Be careful on balconies – Falls at any distance can be fatal.
- Keep an eye on your money – Never carry large amounts of cash on you. It is easy to lose a wallet or bag in crowded areas.
